The Plant/Insect Tube facilitated an experiment examining volatile release rhythms from male and female sea buckthorn plants and the electrophysiological responses of sea buckthorn carpenter moths.
The Y-tube olfactometer featured a main chamber composed of a bottomless cylindrical glass bottle, with two additional test chambers similarly constructed. Each test chamber connected to hollow glass balls containing branches via short cylindrical glass tunnels with ground glass joints, where branches were inserted.
Humidified air was continuously pumped into the glass balls at a rate of 500 ml/min.
